Way Kambas National Park which is the oldest national park in Indonesia, the National Park is located at the southern tip of Sumatra, 110 km from Bandar, Way Kambas National Park (TNWK) was one of the first and oldest national park in Indonesia. This national park occupies 1,300 square miles of coastal lowland forest around Way Kambas River on the east coast of the province of Lampung. TNWK known for elephant conservation, because in addition to being a refuge for Sumatran elephants, the park is also known for their practice.


Way Kambas founded by the Dutch government in 1937 is still preserved as a National Park, and here is believed there are about 200 Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranensis) live in the National Park. Sumatran elephant is one of three recognized subspecies of the Asian Elephant, which is native of the island of Sumatra. differences in general, Asian elephants are smaller than African. Among Asian elephants Sumatran elephant is the smallest, with a shoulder height ranges between 2 meters and 3.2 meters (6.6 feet to 10.5 ft). but is currently very difficult to estimate their numbers because of encroachment and expansion of forest land increasingly out of control.


The establishment of the National Park was originally intended to protect the existence of elephants and at the same time create mutual benefit for both elephants and humans. The training center is also reminiscent of the time of kings or sultans ruled Sumatra, when the elephants are trained and deployed in the war and also for ceremonial purposes. and elephants perform various tasks such as hauling wood or plowing fields. but now in Way Kambas National Park visitors can see elephants doing activities such as playing soccer or other entertaining performances. Permission to enter TNWK can be obtained at the gate. besides coming directly can also be obtained from the conservation HQ in Dublin. The main facilities are found near the national park located 500 meters from the entrance at a place called Satwa Sumatra Elephant Eco Lodge. Located in a spacious walled garden filled with tropical fruit trees, it offers four cottages each with spacious rooms that can accommodate up to four people with spring beds, ceiling fan, hot shower and western style toilet . All guest cottages, facilities, some perimeter lighting and office are powered by renewable solar energy. In a delightful open-air restaurant, authentic Indonesian food served, with a full western breakfast to start the day.
